About Our Team 

The Varalli Group (TVG) consists of a team with real world experience. We take pride in having a vast amount of professional knowledge. We provide services to a variety of state and local agencies, primarily in the community corrections arena as well as to human services agencies, colleges and private businesses. A high percentage of our service is derived from repeat customers and referrals.
David Varalli
Owner and Lead Trainer
David Varalli, has 30 years of community corrections experience. He is a recently retired Senior United States Probation Officer and has experience working in the pretrial, pre-sentence and post-sentence units. David has worked in virtually all specialty areas contained in community corrections, and he brings this practical knowledge to his presentations. 
David has participated in and led the training in Motivational Interviewing for his district's staff since 2009. He is trained in MI proficiency, MI Treatment Integrity (MITI) Coding and is a member of MINT, Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. David was the chair and lead coach/instructor in his district. He traveled the USA as he served on the National Implementation Team for MI in the Probation System.
Experiences have included conducting training at: the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services; Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; the New York City Probation Department; numerous reentry and community  agencies; The Delaware Department of Corrections, and several divisions of New Jersey State Probation. New agencies are added each year, including college faculty and student instruction. He specializes in Motivational Interviewing and is also a certified facilitator of NCTI Real Colors- cognitive behavioral therapy, communication, team building, and motivational programs for your agency or business.

Rick Kent - Trainer Biography
Rick Kent is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since September 2016. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with New York State, and has 12 years of experience in the mental health field. He has served as a social worker at Central New York Psychiatric Center’s satellite unit at Attica Correctional Facility and  provided primary therapy to inmates in the Intermediate Care Program. He also served as the program manager for a transitional residence on the campus of the Rochester Psychiatric Center (RPC).

Currently, he is serving as Social Work Supervisor and supervises the clinical practice of approximately 25 outpatient, mobile crisis, and family care social workers in RPC’s Community Services Unit. Rick previously taught online courses for Empire State College, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Roberts Wesleyan College. Most recently he has begun teaching and coaching Motivational Interviewing skills to groups and individuals.

Kristen Jackson - Trainer Biography
Kristen Jackson earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from SUNY Cortland. She is currently employed by Onondaga County, where she has worked as a Probation Officer for the last 13 years. Kristen has experience working in many different units within her department, including Criminal and Family Court Investigations, Electronic Home Confinement, Alternative To Incarceration Programs, Driving While Intoxicated, and Rockefeller Drug Law Reform. She also is a member of the Community Deployment and Active Shooter teams in her office.

Kristen is the recipient of the 2011 New York State Award for Outstanding Service by a Probation Officer. Presently, Kristen is assigned to Syracuse Community Treatment Court, where she works closely with Drug Court personnel to provide a supportive and structured program for probation violators struggling with substance abuse issues. She is a facilitator of Moral Reconation Therapy and enjoys working with offenders to guide them in setting and achieving goals, while at the same time promoting public safety. She has completed both Basic and Advanced Motivational Interviewing Training through the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, and has demonstrated competency in the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills. Kristen is excited to join The Varalli Group, Inc. so that she can share her experiences with MI with fellow criminal justice colleagues while also continuing to advance her skills.

The Varalli Group is both pleased and excited to partner and collaborate with a fellow MINTIE in upcoming and ongoing training. Cheryl Martin of CCSI and TVG provide joint services!

Cheryl Martin – Trainer Biography
Cheryl Martin has a BSN in Nursing, an MA in Psychology and nearly
45 years of experience as an RN working in the areas of: gynecology, post-surgical unit, operating room, home care and hospital pharmacy. In addition, Cheryl is a member of Motivational Interviewing Network Trainers (MINT), a Motivational Interviewing Assessment Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency (MIA: STEP) trainer for the NIDA Blending Initiative, a Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor and also holds a Trauma Certificate from the University of Buffalo. She has developed curriculum and delivered training on a variety of topics including: Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Planning, trauma and co-occurring disorders.

Cheryl is the Integrated Health Trainer and Clinical Consultant for Coordinated Care Services, Inc. (CCSI) and works in partnership with Monroe County Office of Mental Health; she has held this position for seven years. Prior to CCSI/MCOMH, she served as Nurse Specialist at Catholic Family Center and as Manager at Park Ridge Chemical Dependency Inpatient Rehabilitation. In all Cheryl has over
24 years of experience in behavioral health/addiction.

Her approach to training and supervision demonstrates the spirit of MI, which opens the door for others to find the personal motivation and strengths that can support their commitment to make the changes that will enhance their effectiveness and increase satisfaction with their work. Her training reviews demonstrate that she can guide learners toward an enhanced understanding of what is important to them as professionals and what skills/talents/strengths they have to support personal change. The learners are supported to commit to their identified goals. 

Suzanne Braselton - Office Manager
We are very pleased to announce the addition of Suzanne Braselton to The Varalli Group as Office Manager. Suzanne brings over 28 years of experience in pre-press publishing and over 17 years in office management. She also currently manages the offices of Braselton’s Music and Braselton’s Design & Print Services (formerly Braselton's Desktop Publishing Services) located in Marion, New York.

She is expert in design and layout of business cards, brochures, flyers, posters, newspapers such as (Crossroads Advocate, The Rochester Christian Voice, The Marion Voice), newsletters (The Outdoorsman, News of the Great Outdoors), and resource materials (Wayne County Community Resource Guide). She is also the organizational cornerstone of the offices she serves.

Suzanne's responsibilities for TVG include assisting with reception, scheduling, contracting, accounting, document management and much more as she helps us to deliver the best services possible. She is a high energy, positive asset to TVG.

TVG proudly begins a partnership with is a group of training and content specialists with years of experience with the United States Government, plus gifted private sector presenters in selected fields. Our areas of expertise vary widely. . . but what we have in common is years of the very best preparation and training experience available.                                                  DANNY KUHN
He helped found to bring that same approach to a broader audience. A former social worker and high school teacher, he holds a BA from Marshall University, and a MA in Communication from West Virginia University.

Danny uses a set pricing schedule based on travel, per diem, and expenses at standard prevailing rates plus a set fee per day of actual training. There is no training fee for travel days. Danny can be reached directly at 843-904-1938 or [email protected]  

After completing his BA in Criminal Justice at East Tennessee State University, Jim Patterson began his career as a police officer for the City of Charlotte, North Carolina. Later, he became a state probation officer working with North Carolina parole cases. He was appointed as a United States Probation Officer for the Western District of North Carolina in April 1990. After being promoted to Training Coordinator in 2000, Jim was responsible for managing all staff training for the Western District of North Carolina Probation Office. In 2004, he was promoted to supervisor over a post-conviction supervision unit and continued to perform the District's training coordinator responsibilities. Jim was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2006 and developed policy and procedures for his district. 
For 15 years, Jim worked with the Federal Judicial Center in Washington DC to develop and deliver a variety of training programs for the Federal Court. He served on the national board of the Federal Probation & Pretrial Officers Association from 1993 to 2000. He held positions of regional president, national secretary, and national president. He continues to be a trainer and coach for management training developed by The Paul Hertz Group and is also a certified REAL COLORS trainer. Eddie Samson is the former Chief United States Probation Officer for the Middle District of Louisiana.  He graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Business and Personnel Management, and also played baseball for LSU. He served in the U.S. Air Force, separating as a Captain, and was a co-founder and administrator of the Joint Louisiana Officer Safety Academy.  He served the United States Court from 1979 through his retirement in 2006, but has continued to be one of the most popular trainers for the federal judiciary. He serves on the faculty of the National Training Academy, where his Ethics and Professionalism class is mandatory. He serves as a faculty member for the Federal Judicial Center's prestigious Leadership Development Program. In addition to traveling the country as a trainer in the areas of ethics, professionalism, REAL COLORS programs, and retirement, Eddie also administers a volunteer program he established, called Joshua's Ministry of Mowing and Minor Home Repair, based in Baton Rouge.
